It’s not really a do-it-yourself job, for the average homeowner. You’d best call an electrician.   Be ready to spend  $ 500 or more.   The subject has been discussed quite-a-bit, here in this newsgroup.. you could do a deja.com search for all the old discussions.    Good luck & be careful.   John T.

To be NEC (National Electrical Code) legal you should install a generator transfer panel specially designed for this purpose. They connect only to selected circuits in your home when in use. They are available at most home centers (such as Home Depot) and come with pretty good directions. If you want your entire home powered by a generator (every circuit) you could install a properly sized breaker in your electrical panel and feed it backwards with the generator. Although this works very well, IT IS NOT LEGAL BY THE NEC !!!!!!! You could run into problems with your town electrical inspector,  or if you ever sell your home. My recommendation is the panel specifically designed for this purpose. Hope this helps… Good Luck & Happy Holidays – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Can anyone tell me how I can connect a gas powered generator directly > to my home?  I am only an average homeowner so please be kind. > Thanks

Try looking at the "Direct Generator Hookup" thread in this very newsgroup. — ComputerSmiths Consulting, Inc.    www.compusmiths.com

The transfer switch doesn’t need to be for just a few select circuits. It can be for the entire house. That’s the way mine works, and this job was done by licensed electricians, with all the required permits and inspections. Of course, that means I’m responsible for not overloading the generator, but it makes life a lot easier than implementations where you never seem to have a working outlet where you really need one. I’m not entirely convinced that the "backfeeding" arrangement is illegal. In any case, once you unplug the double-male extension cord, all the evidence is gone, so no one will know except when you have it hooked up. That option was never of interest to me, regardless of whether it might be legal, since I consider it foolish and irresponsible. — nameless
